Internationalization in XALAN

Does XALAN Supports internationlizaion. If yes, do we need to do seom special setting. I was running DOM2DOM sample, with english data it works perfectly fine. Then I change some data inside that to Japanese, it is giving junk. I tried by giving differnt encoding is XML and XSL, then also it gave the same junk. I have tired with iso-2022-jp, Shift_JIS, Unicode.
