Although I can't know for sure,
I'd hazard a guess that this is
because your input file is a
little bit large ... :)
Xalan constructs an internal
model of the whole document to
perform its transformation on,
this takes up lots of memory
(more than the input file).
You might want to rethink your
strategy ... performing general
transformations on such large
chunks of XML at a time is not
very practical.
