I guess I was just thinking out loud. I didn't think your comment was intended
to push one model or the other.
I think that it is best to combine both so that we get all of the positives and
none of the negatives :)

To a certain extend both Xalan and Xerces are being used for mission critical
work. An extended beta period would really embrace both parties. Early
developers would still be able to run a release in beta mode and pragmatic
organizations could wait until .0 hits :)
