If we increase this, we decrease the number of bits available to identify
which DTM the node resides in and thus the number of docs that we can
manipulate at once. Yes, we've looked at switching the nodehandle type to
long; cutting across would be possible but extremely painful and somewhat
destabilizing, and might have performance implications; we're interested
but definitely don't want to do it right now.
