Using a StringReader in the InputSource of stylesheet causes incorrect character 
encoding

The problem here is your output encoding.  The copyright symbol in Unicode has 
the value 0x00a9.  To represent this in UTF-8, which is what you're asking for, 
the unicode value is represented as 0xc2, 0xa9 which is exactly what you're 
seeing.  To get your expected results, change your xsl.output element to

  encoding="ISO-8859-1"

and you'll get the results you're seeking.

BTW, it is generally not a good idea to use Readers as an input argument to the 
StreamSource constructor because this interferes with XalanJ's ability to 
handle the encoding properly.  See the StreamSource constructor javadoc for 
some (small) additional info.
