This just happens to be a testcase which is particularly sensitive to one particular flavor of it. Chris: I don't suppose you've done any analysis of where the storage is being used in your 3x example, have you? Are you also setting variables to the result of a call-template? (If not, that sounds like it may want to be filed as a separate issue.)
