This looks like a bug in Visual Age (or Jikes). This is what the Java Language 
Spec says about the use of "$":

 "The $ character should be used only in mechanically generated source code   
or, rarely, to access preexisting names on legacy systems."

Changing the resolution to "won't fix" ...
