Please see http://xml.apache.org/xalan-j/faq.html#faq-9  Since you're
on JDK 1.4.x, you're *probably* getting the wrong version of Xalan
classes when your application runs, since 1.4 puts a backlevel version
of Xalan inside it's rt.jar, which overrides the user-defined
classpath.

You can experiment with the -bootclasspath option, but the best way to
solve this kind of problem with JDK 1.4 is still open.
