I'll admit to having almost exclusively focused on using
postGres/postGIS for this sort of thing. PostGIS does run on the
windows platforms. Don't know how well it'll run on embedded and
storage/memory limited platforms like the eee. I can do some research
here. For servers, it's a piece of cake.
