You're missing the point a little.
The OpenTracker (my OT III anyway) outputs the string TO TH GPS. Even my
old Garmin 12 will translate this to a way point. Unfortunately the 1
1/2 by 2 inch mono screen doesn't give much. No Maps etc. It WOULD be
nice to output the string from the OT3 directly to Xastir and have full
UMPC based mobile tracking without a full fledges TNC....
At least I think thatd what the OP is after

You get very little information in the $GPWPL strings...

It's better to get the APRS packets to the computer.
Now, with the D710, you can get the APRS packets out of the control
head while the unit is still in APRS mode, showing the decoded packets
on the screen... the best of both worlds.

Xastir does not decode waypoint ($GPWPL) strings. None of the APRS
programs have this capability.
This would be a neat feature, though. split the Kenwood D7/700 GPS
RS232, so that the GPS TX goes to the kenwood and the kenwood TX goes
to xastir for plotting stations.
The D700 is hard to beat for a heads-up summary display, even if
xastir is running on a screen adjacent to it.
