Based on recent experience with Mepis 8.0, which is based on Debian 5.0, the step by step for installing Xastir from source was almost identical to the one for Ubuntu at http://www.xastir.org/wiki/index.php/HowTo:Ubuntu_8.10 As I recall, the Berkely DB version was libdb4.6 (like the instructions say to use for Ubuntu 8.04). If you use Synaptic, you can search for the packages specified in the Ubuntu instructions, and if there are any minor differences in the package names, chances are it will still find them.
