I too use openSUSE 11.1, but unlike Curt, I do use KDE - most specificly KDE 3.5. The version that openSUSE 11.1 installs as its preferred version is KDE 4, however that version really wasn't ready for prime time. If you've just recently performed the installation, and it's running KDE 4, consider doing the installation from scratch again, and this time when you're asked which desktop version you want to install, choose KDE 3.5, or which ever window manager Curt's running. With KDE 3.5, I've completed a multi-boot installation on my laptop, and my home system is a dedicated openSUSE 11.1 installation. All of mine that run Xastire are 32-bit installations, but I think the programmers have pretty well squashed any 64-bit problems. Right Curt?
Also, you can most easily see the error messages that Xastir is generating by opening a command shell on your desktop, then starting Xastir from it. Also, as proposed by Joseph, with KDE 3.5, hovering the mouse cursor over a text box isn't suffient to direct text entry into a text box. You DO need to click in the text box, and you should be able to see a text entry cursor appear in that text box. My installation at work is running in a virtual machine of a different distribution of Linux, and what I see when I click in the Message box on the Send Message Box 1 (which I used to send you a one-liner) is that the border around the text box is a black line, and there's a "I" bar, blinking at the text entry point. I see that your -1 station, which seems to be running UI-View, acknowledged my message in a second or so, so you must have UI-View connected to the internet! 73, Bob, KD7NM dash nothing at home -5 at work -6 in the mobile -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Phil - w2lie Sent: Tuesday, May 05, 2009 8:04 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [Xastir] Linux Newbie Needs Help Hello All. Wondering if you could help a fellow ham who is new to the Linux world. I've installed openSuse 11.1 on a new laptop. This isn't my first Linux attempt, but this is my first time dedicating myself to learning this OS. Since installing Linux last month, I have been playing around with KDE and getting used to some changes. I've tried installing XASTIR via YAST, but it never worked. I found some online resources and was able to overcome MOST of my obstacles. The main one being that X-11 wasn't installed. I finally found that solution and I can now get XASTIR to load on my laptop!! The problem I am having is that I can not enter any text into the text boxes. Because of this, I can not enter my Latitude/Longitude or Call Sign. (as well as anything else that requires text!). All mouse functions seem to work fine. I can download maps from the internet. Am I missing something or a package that allows text in X11? If you need logs, please let me know what to look for..remember, I am very new to Linux. I installed via "Method 2" from this page: http://www.xastir.org/wiki/index.php/HowTo:OpenSUSE_11.0 Thanks - and 73 Phil / w2lie -- www.w2lie.net Long Island Live Scanner Feeds and Forums. _______________________________________________ Xastir mailing list [email protected] http://lists.xastir.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/xastir _______________________________________________ Xastir mailing list [email protected] http://lists.xastir.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/xastir
