More to the point, I AM interested in things like
this. However, I offer that, while purpose-built for
APRS, the D7[01]0 is a flawed radio when folks try to do too
much with it.

Oh sure, they both have their limitations (though the D710 at least has the
advantage of upgradable firmware unlike it's older sibling). But I think this
feature would have been available on any simple text interface. Take a regular
radio with a TNC and attach a HamHUD or something similar and you still have
the equivalent process: view the raw packet in a small screen. It's just that
I happen to have two D700s and a D7A so that's what I'm used to.

Now to add to the mix, it looks like WXSVR is dead and
while Pete Loveall has something together that will serve
out similar data, the one we relied upon for so long is
history. Sorta the nature of the hobby: Someone drops
a service and it's not replicated elsewhere. I've been
trying to make sure the Core stays replicated and
geographically diverse, and I'm doing the same with the CWOP
servers. But that's another story.

Yeah, I noticed that on the APRS SIG mailing list. I haven't had my Xastir
system back up since I moved (still working out some issues with heat in the
room) so I didn't notice it had been switched off until it was mentioned. Of
course that also spawned a nice war over services, replication, release of
code, etc.

Argh. More to read. Pete and I started working on solutions, and didn't pay attention to the flamebait there.
