Hi all,
My 2 cents worth.
Some time ago, I found this very useful web site for anyone using packet
protocol.
http://www.febo.com/packet/layer-one/transmit.html
In my case, I found the information invaluable.

If I can weigh in with some observation about the sample packets?
I downloaded the file and loaded it into Audacity. When listened to,
the first packet is noticeably noisier (crackly hiss) than the second
packet (quite clean) and, when viewed in spectral view, the extra
noise on packet one is visibly noticeable as increased high frequency
and other noise. The second packet is much cleaner in spectral view,
and audibly.
I hope that helps.

Other than extra features on other sound modem software packages, are
there
actual disadvantages on decoding packets where soundmodem does not

well?
I would say those two packets sound fairly decent but they don't
sound like
100% standard packets. Do you know what's sending them?
PocketPacket on iPhone with a baofeng radio was sent through no
antenna to
simulate a weaker signal. The only reason I started testing this
stuff was
because I noticed I was not decoding a large amount of packets I was
hearing, and they didn't seem to have a huge amount of noise on them.

Hello Skyler,

Strange that you were able to get Soundmodem working but not Direwolf.
It's usually the other way around! Happy to give you a hand if you
want.
I was told that packets can be decoded in noisier environments then
standard FM voice, but that isn't showing to be true.
Yeah.. not true. Soundmodem does work but there are several
alternative
options out there now and almost all of them are superior. Here is a
list
I put together some time ago:

Here is a MP3 file of two packets. The first one was not decoded
and the
second one was decoded by sound modem. They both seem pretty clear
noise
wise however, and I want my station to decode as well as possible
when it
is put into use.
I am using speaker audio from an alinco dr-600.
