Well I guess I wasn't holding my mouth right the first couple of times but the
third time was a charm. Using the latest image of Jessie dated 11/25/16 there
are a few things that have to be done before you can SSH into the pi if you
need to do things remotely. Namely SSH has been disabled by default on the
current distribution. I did a few thing first like expand the filesystem, set
the correct localization, time zone and keyboard. I also had to set a 'root'
password which most things don't need on the Pi, but Lee's script asked for it.
Big thanks to Lee cause without his script I doubt I could have ever got Xastir
running. I'm not very Linux savvy.

How about fresh pi(e)? Fresh SD card, Raspbian (or NOOBS and then
Raspbian, build-essential,Lee's script
(http://www.175moonlight.com/xastir/raspbian-xastir-git-build.sh -
haven't looked lately, may itself do all the 'essential' bits of
build-essential). I run mine 'net-only. One of these days I might afford
an audio dongle and cobble together a PTT line for the ol' FT-227R.
That'll be fun! :)
