I have been told directly by Pete Lovell that the firenet.us port 14580
ports are filtered ports but not "IGate" ports. Unlike the APRS-IS
servers' port 14580 which is both a filtered port AND and "IGate" port.
In his words, the firenet.us servers do not maintain a per-connection
"heard" list and therefore do not forward messages addressed to stations
gated via that connection nor any subsequent courtesy posits from
stations originating those messages.
Pete told me not to connect an IGate to a firenet.us port 14580 becasue
it wouldn't do proper messaging due to this lack of a "heard" list in
those servers.
But yes, they are all running javAPRSSrvr, just that the configuration
is apparently different.

I guess I don't understand the "heard" list comment. The heard list is
maintained in the APRS igate, not in the APRS-IS or Firenet servers. In
fact the APRS-IS and Firenet servers are running the same server software.
I know 'cuz I run two of the Firenet servers. I've also messed with the
code in Xastir having to do with deciding whether or not to gate a message
or ack/nack between the internet and RF.
It's always possible (highly likely?) that I've forgotten something
important too, so if I'm missing something here, please explain further.
Thanks!

I don't believe an I-Gate CONNECTED To Firenet is a good thing. Firenet
does not utilize a 'heard" list so messaging is broken. An I-Gate should
always use APRS-IS.
A second instance of the client could be ran to provide a view of the
Firenet offerings.

No, it's frowned upon to connect to multiple internet servers at once.
You'd switch the one you have defined over to one of the Firenet addresses
instead. Firenet and the APRS-IS servers are connected, so you should just
pick up MORE stuff with Firenet but not lose anything by connecting there
instead of APRS-IS.
Some stuff is only on Firenet. Like quakes down to magnitude 0.1, more of
the NWS weather alerts, stuff like that.

Hey, Curt, thanks for the replies. I have the I-gating set up as you
suggested. We're using noam.aprs2.net as the server and the code that
callpass generated when we used it.
When you talk about the firenet server stuff, how would I use that? Do I
set up another internet interface?
Thanks again,Mickey

Hey David,This is Mickey, Flip's wife. the xastir site has "TBD" on the
section for Igating. Other than how to turn on igating, there's no help.
The most up-to-date docs would be the text files with the code. The Wiki
pages won't be as complete.
For igating there are two places to tweak in Xastir:
1) File -> Configure Defaults -> IGate Options2) Interface -> Interface
Control -> Add -> Internet Server -> Add -> Put in options there for the
particular APRS-IS server you want to connect to.
I'd recommend checking "Activate on Startup?" "Allow Transmitting", and
"Reconnect on NET failure?". You'll need to put in Host, Port, and
Pass-code there.
Also note that you can click on the dashed-line on the drop-down windows
to chop them off and make them stick around for a bit. You can then hit
the
'X' in the corner to make them go away.
Also on the "Interface" menu is "Disable Transmit: ALL". Do NOT check
that.
