Even when things are working normally, cut/Paste don't work in xastir on
Ubuntu using CTRL-X, CTRL-V, so I wouldn't expect them to work for Dave.

Can you try writing the message elsewhere and using a copy and paste
function to enter the message?
If it works it would provide information on exactly which bit isn't
responsive.
