I didn't write that code, but found this in the help-English.dat
file:

Enable Map Grid
When enabled, this option will display a grid on the map.   If the
coordinate system is UTM a UTM grid will be displayed.  If the
coordinate system is latitude/longitude then a latitude and
longitude grid will be displayed.  As you zoom in the grid switches
to a finer resolution.  The spacing of the latitude and longitude
grid may be manually adjusted with the "+" and "-" keys.
