the web site says:

"Also included is mpr2geotiff, a command line application to convert
said maps into the open GeoTIFF format.
...
If you are a user of the maps mentioned above and simply want to
convert them into an open format read by many applications, you
probably should get mpr2geotiff. Binaries are provided for Windows and
Linux."

so, since xastir already supports geoTIFF, maybe using this tool to
convert the existing data is the way to go?

Or maybe it's one of those MrSID type things, where the MPR/MPH format
is super-compressed and converted geoTIFFs would be huge in
comparison?
