Murry I ran into this to this issue when I upgraded to ubuntu 7.10 from 7.04, I am using the gnome windows manager and a nVidia GeForce 6200 PCI card. I am pretty much a newbee at this so I can't tell you why this worked but I will list the sequence of steps I took as everything seems to be working ok now. My first configuration was after the install was with the restricted drivers installed and screen resolution at 1280x1024. At this point all processes were running ok including GoogleEarth except I was getting the cigar shaped window when opening the interface control and the map chooser in xastir. Curt pointed me to a similar problem in the archives under the title "Xastir LSB with Ubuntu ?" with an ATI card. At this point I disabled the restricted drivers and set screen resolution to 800x600 and restarted.(this was the opposite solution to the ATI solution) Here the interface and map chooser opened fine. I configured xastir at this point and then changed screen resolution back to 1280x1024 and everything was still working in the xastir windows. The last thing I did was to reinstall restricted drivers and restart. At this point all is fine and no problems with a cigar shape window showing up on opening windows in xastir. Go figure?
