I just downloaded Ubuntu 7.1 and managed to install Xastir. I found
where the xastir maps are located, but I cannot put downloaded maps in
there as it appears to be read-only.
/usr/share/xastir/maps
I am not knowledgeable about Linux to be able to change the
permissions.
Or should I?

I have Xastir 1.9.2 loaded and running well on my MacBook Pro now
thanks to several of you and your tips to getting the KeySpan working.
But there are still a couple of outstanding issues I would like to
throw out for discussion.
The first is when I'm trying to retrieve a FindU trail, it always
comes back "Failed". I've used it on other versions with no problem
and 'yes' I have an internet connection ...etc.
The second issue is with my maps, not even the default maps that come
with Xastir in the Online folder show up when I try to configure there
use. They just do not show in the list.
The second issue above makes me wonder if I have the ability to
display .geo maps, how do I know, how can I find out?
Thanks guys.

Welcome to Linux and file permissions.
System wide executables and their files are normally not accessible
for
writing by normal users.
You'll need to have 'root' permission to write those files. Use the
'sudo' command.

All 3 sound related to me - sounds like you don't have I-net access
for
Xastir - for some reason.

I had looked for an Imagemagick developement package but because I
wasn't
sure
that was what I actually needed I didn't dig deeply enough. Anyway,
after
several reboots into Windows (I don't have Internet access under
Linux,
and it's
a real pain) to resolve package dependencies these are the packages
that
are
needed:
libimagemagick-devel
libdjvulibre-devel
libjbig-devel
libjasper1-devel
libtiff-devel
libbzip2-devel
Thanks again.

Hmm, I just added Mandriva One 2008 to my Linux box (dual booting
now with
Mepis). The package manager finds libmagick10.7.0-devel, which
matches up
with what worked before. Are you perhaps using a different flavor of
Mandriva 2008? Regardless, I'm glad to hear you got it resoloved. No
internet access on Linux? Ouch - and perhaps a bit unlucky. I
have tried
out a lot of Linux distributions over the past year or so, and
Mandriva was
one of the better ones for hardware detection (at least with my
stuff).
