This works very well, BTW. I haven't had as much success with a D710 yet, but I'm working on it.

Normally you'd set up tnc-startup.d700 and tnc-stop.d700 as the
start/stop files in the Interface->Properties serial port setup in
Xastir, and let Xastir do the beaconing for the fixed station
instead of the D700.
