Only thing I can guess is that you somehow recompiled Xastir without DBFAWK support --- that is what it sounds like, because the behavior of Xastir on shapefiles without dbfawk is about what you describe. Look at the "Help->About" dialog and check the "Libraries used:" line. Do you see "PCRE dbfawk" there?
