I tried the latter one, and it seems to work. I copied the autogen/configure/make output below. I grepped *, po/* and m4/* for any 0.18, and it doesn't find any. Everything it uses now seems to come from 0.17 or earlier. So it seems autopoint does the job, and if I understood the docs correctly, it would consult the AM_GNU_GETTEXT_VERSION line in configure.ac to know what version of the macros to supply. (And that this is the critical difference with gettextize, which would always use the version of your installed gettext.) But only you guys can test that, as for me it would be the same. I agree this is the way to go, as it has fewer files in git.
