There's no specific place I can recommend.  What I generally
recommend for those driving up from Illinois is to get a hotel
room in Madison.  But since you're looking for rustic living
quarters that won't do.  Here are a few ideas:

Here's a B&B that is in an absolutely wonderful setting.  It high
on a remote hill yet is only a short drive from Spring Green and
Governor Dodge State Park.  I've never stayed there but I've been
to the site.

You'll find this and other options by searching the
lodging-wisconsin site.  You can select cross country skiing as a
search criteria.  Be advised, however, that this doesn't
necessarily mean there are groomed trails on-site.  In fact,  I
suspect that will be hard to find.

Based on the results I got, it looks like places with both
cottages and cross country skiing tend to be located near Lake
Geneva or the Dells.
