CROSS COUNTRY SKI  TRAIL REPORT

March 23, 2001

WEATHER FORECAST:Temps - Highs in 20s. Some light snow possible.

GENERAL CONDITIONS: Cooler temps will stalll the thaw/freeze cycle, but many areas will be unable to deal with the frozen hardpack unless they have a power tiller. Those regional trails with this equipment include: ABR, American Birkebeiner, Telemark,  and possibly Wolverine.

"Crust Skiing" is now an option in many areas - especially on some lakes and in open wooded areas.

This report will now only include those trails that are still grooming or submitting reports. Although many trails are no longer being  groomed, skiing is still possible at many as the thawing snow settles and tends to even out the surface (although not nearly as nice as a groomed surface) and skating may be possible. Good tracks will be hard to find except at areas that are still grooming.

ABR TRAILS
Ironwood, MI
Conditions: Continue to be Very Good.

AFTERHOURS SKI TRAIL - Brule River State Forest
Brule, WI
The Brule River State Forest's Afterhours Ski Trail was groomed on 03-15-01. Though the condition is very good to excellent, the conditions  change pending on whether the particular section of trail has a southern exposure. Expect that the trail will get icy from the freeze/thaw cycle  that has been occurring, and will continue to occur the rest of the season. Daytime highs will be in the 40's and nighttime lows will be in the teens. Mornings will be fast and afternoons will be slow.

AMERICAN BIRKEBEINER TRAIL
Cable/Seeley/Hayward, WI
The grooming policy for the rest of the season will be as follows: The American Birkebeiner Trail will be groomed from the County OO Trail Head south to the Fish Hatchery Trail Head with every three inches of fresh snow. The grooming crew will also do their best to maintain this  portion of the trail for skier safety and for weekend skiing. Please be advised that spring temperatures and snow conditions will be a major factor in when grooming occurs and will be based on the Trail Supervisor's discretion.

Note: This does not mean that the north half of the trail will be unskiable, particularly on slightly warmer parts of the day.

BLUE HILLS TRAIL
Bruce, WI
Great spring skiing on Thursday, March 22 -- effortless!
Freeze-thaw cycles continue to produce an overnight crust that gives way
to a fast, corn-snow surface by mid to late morning.  Skiing in the afternoon was a bit slower, but still very enjoyable.  Striding using waxless skis should be enjoyable as the base softens each day. Temperatures peaked about 39 degrees F on Thursday, and other than one bare spot visible on a steep, sun-exposed hill, the base is holding up well. Grooming this weekend might be considered -- although probably is unnecessary.  The ruts from yesterdays' skiers tend to obliterate with
the daytime thaw, and the surface is ready for new skiers each morning. .
