CROSS COUNTRY SKI  TRAIL REPORT

March 30, 2001

WEATHER FORECAST:Temps - Highs near 40. Some light snow possible/maybe rain.

GENERAL CONDITIONS: Spring conditions prevail with thaw/freeze cycle depending on daily temperatures.

"Crust Skiing" is now an option in many areas - especially on some lakes and in open wooded areas.

This report will now only include those trails that are still grooming or submitting reports. Although many trails are no longer being  groomed, skiing is still possible at many as the thawing snow settles and tends to even out the surface (although not nearly as nice as a  groomed surface) and skating may be possible. Good tracks will be hard to find except at areas that are still grooming.

ABR TRAILS
Ironwood, MI
3/29 -It is lightly snowing, our new snow was powertilled Monday, with the Pisten Bully and regroomed today with the "NEW 9 Foot" Tidd Tech. Tracks
are being reset today and can be reported as very good. We will continue grooming and remain open as long as a reasonable number of skiers are
coming to ski, either pass holders or $5/day skiers. We do have spring skiing conditions, which means the snow is plenty thick with no bare spots,
but it is varaible depending on the sun and the temp of the day and time that you ski. The snow is mainly corn snow and is groomable with our
equipment. Klister and waxless skis are good choices for the conditions today, depending on how much new snow we get during the day.

AFTERHOURS SKI TRAIL - Brule River State Forest
Brule, WI
As of 03-27-01 the Brule River State Forest's Afterhours Ski Trail is inexcellent condition. The classical track is excellent and the skate lane is fast.
About 1/2 inch of snow fell on the trail the night of 03-25-01 helping some of the areas exposed to direct sun from being icy.
The trail will no longer be groomed this season.

AMERICAN BIRKEBEINER TRAIL
Cable/Seeley/Hayward, WI
The American Birkebeiner trail was last groomed on Friday and Saturday March 23rd & 24th from the County OO Trail Head south to the Fish Hatchery Trail Head. In an effort to preserve the remaining snow the trail will not be groomed this weekend. Overnight temperatures are expected to be around 30F. The
Trail Supervisor feels that we need to see overnight temperatures of around 20F in order to groom the trail. Almost the entire section of trail from County OO to Fish Hatchery has snow cover and ski conditions
are fair.

Note: This does not mean that the north half of the trail will be unskiable, particularly on slightly warmer parts of the day.

BLUE HILLS TRAIL
Bruce, WI
Freeze-thaw cycles have produced a crust that gives way to a fast, corn snow surface when temperatures rise above freezing.  With clouds and temperatures reaching the upper thirties again today (Thursday, March 29), skating conditions were very good late afternoon when skating a -inch corn snow surface on a firm base.  Edge control was great, gentle downhills provided prolonged glides on a single ski -- amazing skiing
for this late in March.  In most areas, the base is probably still a foot deep.  Other than bare spots on steep, sun-exposed hills, the base is holding up well.  No further grooming is anticipated this season.
