CROSS COUNTRY SKI TRAIL REPORT
TRAIL CONDITIONS
Updated: January 5, 2002
GENERAL CONDITIONS: Temperatures high near 30+F. Chances of snow on Sat. & Sun.
There is adequate to good snow cover across much of the north, from approximately Hayward to Lake Superior. Bases vary from 2 to 6 inches or more. Not a lot of recent snowfall. Surfaces are generally hard packed. It has been a challenge to set deep tracks. Places of note with fair to good tracks include: Mt. Ashwaybay, Bayfield (good), Mt. Valhalla, Washburn, ABR & Wolverine, Ironwood, MI (excellent), Drummond Trails (fair to good), Telemark (fair to good), Penokee, Mellen (fair).
ABR TRAILS
Ironwood, MI
6 to 10 inch solid base. Good tarcks and firm skating lane. Conditions: It doesn't get any better than this.
AFTERHOURS CROSS COUNTRY SKI TRAIL
Brule, WI
1-4 inch base, grooming regularly but not enough base to set track. Conditions: Fair to Good.
AMERICAN BIRKEBEINER TRAIL
The trail was packed this week from the Start area all the way to Duffy's Field in Hayward. There is about 1-3" base on most portions of the trail. Sporadic track set on the loop around "OO". Still not enough snow to set a good track. Conditions: Good skating on hard packed powder with only occasional rough spots.
