CROSS COUNTRY SKI  TRAIL REPORT

 January 14, 2002

Some light snow - 1-2" across the region. Temps returning to colder, more seasonable ranges.

Don't let the lack of huge snowfall discourage you from skiing. There is still plenty of good skiing in Northwest Wisconsin.

ABR Trails, Ironwood - 5-9" base, all trails groomed 1/12. Conditions very good to excellent with excellent tracks.

American Birkebeiner Trail, Cable, Seeley, Hayward - Skiing on the Birkie trail is actually quite good considering the low snow so far this year. From 00 south there are occasional thin spots, but very enjoyable and safe skiing. The same is true of Hatchery to Mosquito Brook. The North half of the trail is holding up quite well. An additional 1-2" snowfall top off the hard pack nicely. Conditions: Fair to Good.

Blue Hills Trails, Bruce - Fun late afternoon ski January 10 with temperatures near 30 degrees F, skating on hardpack, with conditions ranging from very good to poor. Due to 48 hours of above freezing temperatures, conditions have deteriorated -- but the little snow available has held up well in some areas and the skiing was fairly fast. The base remains limited, in many areas offering enough cover to provide surprisingly good skiing. On some sun exposed hills, conditions have become borderline for climbing, and safe descent requires walking

Brule River State Forest/Afterhours Trail: conditions are "poor to fair". Someplaces are better than others. The base is thin and there are occasional sticks poking through and a couple rocks but it is quite skiable and we've gotten good reports. The tracks that were set January 4th remain but are really rough.

Drummond Trail, Drummond - Fair to poor. Shallow track on Boulevard to Jackrabbit. Other areas considered poor.

Hatchery Trail, Hayward - upper loop is good skating. Lower loop is very thin under the pine trees, otherwise, it's okay.

Hospital Trail, Hayward: Thin but skiable with older skis

MECCA Trail, Mercer - About 1" of new snow on top of 1-3" icy base... fair to poor conditions with good coverage in the hardwoods and only a few rocks showing... Avoid the rocky eskers and stay on the main trails... tracks skied in between trail heads...Not enough snow yet to level base, so there are rough sections. Use caution on Bridge as ramp is bare...about 90% of the trail is open..

Montreal Trail, Montreal - Good to very good. Base: 8"

Mt. Ashwabay, Bayfield - should be good for classical.

Mt. Valhalla (Teuton & Valkyrie), Washburn - soft, not in good shape at the moment.

Mukwonago Trail, Hayward - has not been regroomed. Conditions: Poor.

North End Trail, Cable - Fair, rock skis recommended.

Penokee Mtn Trail, Mellen: has not been regroomed. Conditions: Poor.

Rock Lake Trail, Cable -  has not been regroomed. Conditions: Poor.

Seeley Trail, Seeley - 5 km open with a good track for classical and good skating

Telemark Resort, Cable - Approximately 48 KM of the Telemark/North End/Kortelopet 65 KM trail system have been groomed for skating. This includes the Birkebeiner Loops, Tony Wise Trail, John Bauer Trail (to Kortelopet split), Kortelopet Trail (rolled from start to 9 KM), North End Trail, Bill Koch Trail on the south side of Mt. Telemark, Sven Wiik and Caldwell World Cup trails. Classical tracks have been set on the Birkie Loops, Tony Wise Trail and the Kortelopet Trail from 11 KM to 23 KM. Tracks are thin in sections but very good in many sections. One inch new snow. The trail snow base is thin. The trails are in fair to good condition and skiable throughout.

Uller Trail, Iron Belt - Good with spots (mostly rocks and concentrated on K-Spur). Base:4-8".

West Torch River, Clam Lake - has not been regroomed. Conditions: Poor.

Wolverine Trails, Ironwood - 17 km groomed for skating and striding. Received 3" of snow Saturday, and received another 3" Monday morning .The forecast is calling for more snow mid-week.
