TRAIL CONDITIONS


Updated: January 30, 2002



GENERAL CONDITIONS: Temperatures returning to seasonable ranges. Cold early in the week with highs later in the week in high teens & near 20.

Snowfall: Douglas, Bayfield, Ashland and Iron Counties - 3 to 9 inches across these northernmost counties with locally higher accumulation.

ABR TRAILS
Ironwood, MI
6-10" base. All trails groomed daily. Conditions Very Good to Excellent with excellent tracks. Conditions better in the morning that during the warmest part of the day.

AFTERHOURS CROSS COUNTRY SKI TRAIL/BRULE RIVER STATE FOREST
Brule, WI
The trail has been 100% groomed and tracked. Conditions are good for skating and fair for classic. The skating lane has been Ginzu groomed. There is light snow in the forecast for Sunday and Monday. Candlelight ski event is January 26th 5-9pm. 2 miles of trail will be lit and grills and a bonfire will be provided.

AMERICAN BIRKEBEINER TRAIL
Following the snowfall on 1/29 the trail was rolled and a track set on the north half. Conditions: Very Good.

ASHLAND SKI TRAIL

Rolled and open for skiing.

BLUE HILLS TRAIL

Conditions were fair to very good Thursday (January 24) skating on hardpack (rare icy spots) with temperatures near twenty degrees F. Despite the limited seasonal snowfall, most trail sections have adequate base. In many areas you can ski full out; other areas have occasional rocks and dirt spots, and you will need to pick your way. Because of low snow conditions, use caution on downhills. Rock skis recommended. Both the WestSideTrail and the EastSideTrail were rolled January 19 and a striding lane was set on some sections.

The Boulevard including the North Country Loop and the Racetrack were groomed and tracked on 1/16. All other loops were left alone. Conditions on the groomed trails are fair to poor. The base varies but averages two inches.

LHS Trail conditions on January 23 were fair/poor. There has not been enough snowfall to regroom in the last week. Thawing and refreezing have left icy conditions with bare spots beginning to develop, particularly in the striding track and on the trail parallel to Rocky Ridge Road. The lights will be off until there is new snow.

PATTISON PARK TRAIL
"The ski trail is aesthetically beautiful but functionally poor." New snowfall of approx. 6 inches of compactedd to a mere half inch. Estimated base is a few inches, not nearly enough for a decent packing, grooming, and tracking. Red (short) trail was packed Tuesday. Not enough snow to pack blue (long) trail. Still not enough decent snow to lay down track.

TELEMARK SKI TRAILS

New snow: 3" on 1/28-29 and 1 " on 1/29. Approximately 53 KM of the Telemark/North End/Kortelopet 65 KM trail system have been groomed for skating. This includes the Birkebeiner Loops, Tony Wise Trail, John Bauer Trail (to Kortelopet split), Kortelopet Trail (rolled from start to 9 KM), Berard Connection, North End Trail, Bill Koch Trail, Sven Wiik, Caldwell and Marty Hall World Cup trails. Approxiamately 40 KM of classical tracks have been set on the Birkie Loops, Tony Wise Trail, North End Trail, World Cup Sven Wiik and Caldwell Trail and the Kortelopet Trail from 9 KM to 23 KM. Tracks are thin in a few sections but very good in most sections. Trails are in good to very good condition.

TIMBERLAND HILLS SKI TRAILS
Cumberland, WI
The Lighted Trail has been packed and tracked. The Outer Loop and Short Loop have been packed, and the rest of the system should soon be packed and possibly tracked. Skiing isn't bad

TIMM'S HILL/HIGHPOINT SKI TRAILS

Good; groomed and tracked Jan. 14 & 17; lighted night skiing is available on Wednesday and Saturday or for groups upon request.
