NORTH END CLASSIC SKI RACE READY TO GO SUNDAY, FEB. 10

CABLE, Wis. (February 1, 2002)  Its been a difficult year for cross country ski races across the upper Midwest, with far more being canceled than actually held.  Fortunately for the North End Ski Club in Cable, the area trails have endured the anything-but-normal winter the region has thus far experienced.  The club will present the second annual North End Classic on Sunday, February 10 on what are expected to be excellent trail conditions.  We have had pretty good skiing conditions just about all winter, says North End Ski Club president Ron Bergin.  Despite the general drought elsewhere, the north half of the Birkie Trail, the Telemark Trails and the North End Trail, all of which are used in the North End Classic, all have had reasonably good skiing since around Christmas, he adds.

The 23 km classical technique ski race will start at 10:00 AM at the Cable Union Airport near Telemark Resort at the start area for the American Birkebeiner.  The race will follow the course for the Kortelopet which includes portions of the American Birkebeiner ski trail, the North End Trails, and Telemark Nordic Ski Trails and this year has been selected as a qualifying event for racers wishing to participate in the Kortelopet.

The North End Classic is sponsored by Toko ski wax who is providing a headband for the first 200 racers and an assortment of prizes.  Telemark Resort is the event sponsor and host and will provide race facilities and other support for the event.  The Classic is a fund raising event for the North End Ski Club which over the past several years has developed and maintained the North End Trail Head, warming cabin, and ski and snowshoe trails at the north end of the American Birkebeiner ski trail near Cable.

Approximately 150 to 200 ski racers are expected to participate in the second annual running of the North End Classic.  With so many other events being canceled around the region, racers are anxious to compete and we could see even more than what we expect, says Bergin.  In addition, many racers will be in the area that weekend to also race in the Pre-Birkie on Saturday.

Registration for the North End Classic will be on Saturday, Feb. 9 from 4:00 to 8:00PM at Telemark Resort and 7:00-9:30AM on Sunday, also at Telemark.  Registration fees are $30 through February 9 and $35.00 on race day.  Racers receive a Toko headband, bowl of chili and bread for lunch, and opportunities to win great door prizes.
