CROSS COUNTRY SKI  TRAIL REPORT

Updated: February 1, 2002

GENERAL CONDITIONS: Temperatures returning to seasonable ranges. Cold early in the week with highs later in the week in high teens & near 20.

Snowfall: 1-2", preceded by 2-4.

There continues to be good skiing in the northernmost parts of the region with some additional reports coming in from further south.

ABR TRAILS

Ironwood, MI
6-10" base. 2" of fresh snow. All trails groomed daily. Conditions Very Good to Excellent with excellent tracks.

AFTERHOURS CROSS COUNTRY SKI TRAIL/BRULE RIVER STATE FOREST
Brule, WI

The trail was groomed Thursday night just before it snowed an inch. This inch of moderately dense snow "non lake effect snow" was a real blessing to the trail. There still are some thin spots on the Spruce and Oak Trails when you get into the Norway Spruce areas. The inch of snow will be left to get skied in. The whole trail is tracked and most of the track is at least 3/4 full depth. With use today the inch of new snow should make very good skiing. Some of the trail was getting a crown last week and that was removed on Wednesday of this week. Skate skiing is very good and classical skiing is in good condition. Base depth is 1" to 4.5" thick.

AMERICAN BIRKEBEINER TRAIL

This week we have received 3-5" of fresh snow. Yesterday the entire start area was packed with a snowmobile and light grooming equipment. The trail was packed for skating 30' wide from the start to Gravel Pit. Today one set of classic tracks will be set from the Powerline to the end of the lights at "OO". They will also pack the Powerline to the start the entire width of the trail.
Skiing conditions are reported to be good on the north half of the trail.Conditions are fair south of "OO" and marginal as you go further south. There is approxiamtely a 2-3" packed base on most of the trail.

BLUE HILLS TRAIL

Bruce, WI
Conditions were fair to very good Thursday (January 24) skating on hardpack (rare icy spots) with temperatures near twenty degrees F. Despite the limited seasonal snowfall, most trail sections have adequate base. In many areas you can ski full out; other areas have occasional rocks and dirt spots, and you will need to pick your way. Because of low snow conditions, use caution on downhills. Rock skis recommended. Both the WestSideTrail and the EastSideTrail were rolled January 19 and a striding lane was set on some sections.
