CROSS COUNTRY SKI TRAIL REPORT
TRAIL CONDITIONS
Updated: February 8, 2002
Current conditions: Temperatures to mid to high 30s. Returning to near 30 through the weekend.
Winter storm warning for Sat. evening with accumulations of 6-10" possible.
ABR TRAILS
Ironwood, MI
(2/8) Trails are holding up fine, we have been powertilling, renovating, etc. to provide for some excellent ski conditions. The majority of the snow has remained a dry powdery snow despite the above freezing temps the last 2 afternoons. We have been grooming daily including retracking any glazed tracks. Conditions: Very Good to Excellent.
AFTERHOURS CROSS COUNTRY SKI TRAIL/BRULE RIVER STATE FOREST

As of Thursday morning Feb. 7 the trail is in fair shape for classic and good shape for skating. There are a couple places where the classic tracks have melted through but there is good snow coverage on the skating lane. When the weather cools down we will screen roll and ginzu and should have better conditions over the weekend.
AMERICAN BIRKEBEINER TRAIL
Thursday, February 7th - Last week we received 3-5" of fresh snow. The entire trail has been packed and rolled for skating with a snowmobile and light grooming equipment. There are two sets of classic tracks from the power line to "OO. The classic track has been set shallow, so as not bring up or expose any dirt at this time. Today a Cragin will be dragged over the trail to help level it. This will be done from "OO" north to the Powerline. On Friday, the trail will be groomed for the Pre-Birkie. Tracks will also be set on at least one side. Skiing conditions are very good on the north half of the trail. Conditions are good, south of "OO". Be aware, that a few south facing hills, south of "OO" are opening up already, due to the bright sun, and do require caution. There is approximately a 2-4" packed base on most of the trail.

BLUE HILLS TRAIL

Brilliant sunshine and southerly breezes pushed temperatures into the upper thirties today (February 6), but the base remained firm and conditionsremained fair to very good at midday skating packed powder and hardpack Sun-exposed areas became sticky by late morning. Due to occasional areas with thin base cover, it is still wise to use your rock skis until you learn the trail sections with the best snow cover. Grooming was last performed Sunday, Feb. 3 when the entire trail system was rolled again and the striding lane was extended to include the WestSideTrail.

Hatchery park was packed for skating Monday, Jan 4. No tracks set. Skiing is good except under the dense pine trees.
FLAMBEAU HILLS SKI TRAILS

Good; packed Feb. 1 There will be a Candlelight Ski on the Short Swing loop on Saturday, February 9 beginning at 6 p.m. The trail will be lit by candles and groomed (not tracked) just prior. Admission is free. A grill and warming fire will be provided. Bring your own food, etc.

There was touch-up grooming of the skate lane on the evening of February 5th. No new snow had fallen recently and the diagonal track was left alone. Snow was scoop-shoveled on a few thin spots. Conditions are fair to good but could deteriorate with 3 thaw days predicted. The lights are on from dusk to 10:00 p.m.

Trail conditions are still poor and the. base is still not sufficient for grooming or tracking.
The short trail is packed but not tracked, bare spots are visible. Long trail has not been groomed at all due to lack of snow.

THE INBOUND BIRKEBEINER LOOP FROM THE POWER LINE TO THE LODGE WILL BE CLOSED FROM 10:45 AM TO 11:45 AM ON SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 9 FOR THE START OF THE HAYWARD LIONS PRE-BIRKIE RACE.
THE OUTBOUND BIRKEBEINER LOOP FROM THE LODGE TO THE POWERLINE WILL BE CLOSED FROM 9:45AM TO 10:45 AM ON SUNDAY, FEBURARY 10 FOR THE START OF THE NORTH END CLASSIC.
TIMBERLAND HILLS SKI TRAILS

The entire system was packed and tracked on 2-1 following 2" of fresh snow. Most of the trail is in good condition, with a few rough spots remaining. Skiing is improving and is no longer icy.
TIMM'S HILL/HIGHPOINT SKI TRAILS

Conditions: Excellent; groomed and tracked Feb. 2 & Feb. 9; lighted night skiing is available on Wednesday and Saturday or for groups upon request.
TOMAHAWK LAKE SKI TRAIL
Barnes, WI
Groomed and track set Monday, Feb. 4. Limited base and underlying crust prevented a full depth track set on about 50% of the trail. Exposed needles mixed with snow on only a couple very short segments. Segments with full track set are in excellent condition. Forecasted warm temperatures mid week may deteriorate the trail.
