Dear Ms. Morgan:

Firstly I would like to thank you and all of your staff on what you are doing to make the Birkie a reality in 2002.  It has been a very trying winter for all of us.  With that said, I will get to the point of the matter:

This is in regards to the rescheduling of the Thursday events for the Birkie (Sprints and BARNBIRKIE).  I was at the Telemark lodge last weekend for the Pre-Birkie and there seemed to be plenty of snow to put on these events on SNOW at Telemark.  I hope the decision to change these events to a roller event and walk/run was not determined solely on economics of the Hayward businesses.

The spirit of the Barnbirkie is to get kids EXCITED about skiing, snow and winter.  If we have a location that has the resources to have the event as a ski event, we owe it to the kids to make every effort to make it a SKI event.  I am skiing in my 9th Birkie and can only speak for myself, but I would suggest that if a course could be setup at Telemark with some man made snow, do so and don't try to get the Birkie skiers all the way to Duffy field.  The adults will keep coming back - we are already hooked, but the kids are the ones that we need to keep excited about the sport or else in a few years we will not have a sport.

I am speaking as a concerned parent who has a 6 year old.  It is going to be hard to explain why he can stay at Telemark and ski or goto Hayward and run ( This would be his 3rd Barnbirkie).  I hope, for the kids sake, that you all have taken this into account.  I know you have a tremendous amount of things on your mind, but hopefully you will give this a few minutes.

Thanks you for your time and continued dedication to these events and Skiing in general.

Sincerely,

George Larson
