This company http://www.everslide.com/productse/ski_hills.html responded to
my very recent inquiry that their alpine plastic mats will in fact work for
skate skiing.

They also said they have a mat that works for classical. Why they don't
tout this on their Web site is a mystery to me. Anyone have any experience
with skiing on this type of surface? When it actually snows, woudl the snow
just slide off (in which case we'd need to get Parks to allow us to cut a
separate trail)? How durable are these things?

They said if we give them some specific width and length of trail we would
like to cover, they would give us a ballpark figure on how much a synthetic
ski surface would cost. I suspect it's a small fortune, but if all club
members contributed one half of what we spent traveling far afield to find
snow this winter, we might scratch up a good downpayment.

If they could build a plant in the US that uses recycled fiber, the US could
meet EPA's recently announced goal for reducing the amount of old carpeting
that goes into landfills. What a partnership that could be!

Might be far more costly than snow making equipment, initially, but would
require no one to be out all night. Would be interesting to compare the two
full-cycle costs and benefits.

Any members of the Board interested in pursuing this? We could have a form
of skiing "24-7-365."
