I'm curious about the unusual sight on Lake Mendota this morning (1/23/03,

is it a big crack that's causing the "steaming", or is the ice just so much
"warmer" than the air?

It's amazing how much heat can radiate upward through leads and cracks
in lake ice; we see this effect quite often in Hudson Bay, Canada:

This is a clear-sky, infra-red image -- red/yellow colours* are warm
surfaces, cyan/blue colours* are cold surfaces.

* colour: how Canadians spell "color"
