We have some similar phenomenons here in Minnesota also. Because we had a
record amount of rainfall this summer, the ground water table is saturated
and the water is oozing upward, keeping some lakes open in spots.

It's amazing how much heat can radiate upward through leads and cracks
in lake ice; we see this effect quite often in Hudson Bay, Canada:
