Warning. On Sunday, there was a huge open area of water right by
the Vilas Park shelter.

I ice skated all over L. Wingra over New Year's week and the week after
that, and the
only open water then was in front of Edgewood's biological station. So, I
was really surprised this last Sunday to see such a large open spot just
south and a little west of the shelter.

Even if everything looks white now (I don't know if it does), there could
be some very thin ice out there, especially by the shelter. I don't know
if other spots on the lake would be safer. I don't know the water flow or
dynamics there. But, don't go out by the shelter.
