Hi Assaf,
I will try to answer the external DNS server settings. If you want to use
your IT DNS server as your cluster's dns server, then set
site.nameservers=<your IT dns server IP>, after the compute nodes are
deployed, they would have /etc/resolv.conf pointing to your IT dns server.
You can refer to xcat doc
http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/xcat/index.php?title=Cluster_Name_Resolution
, section "1.4.1.2 Choice #2: DNS Outside of the Cluster" for your
scenario.
If you want xCAT to push DNS records to your IT DNS server, I think you
need the additional configuration below:
1. set your /etc/resolv.conf on your management node point to your IT dns
server IP and IT dns domain name.
2. make sure your IT DDNS server can be updated by the third part, such as
xCAT. If your IT DDNS server only allows update via key, then you need
make sure it can accept the xCAT key. For example, your IT DDNS server
/etc/named.conf has something like:
allow-update {
key xcat_key;
};
You can get the xcat_key from the xcat passwd table:
-bash-3.2# tabdump passwd
#key,username,password,cryptmethod,comments,disable
"omapi","xcat_key","Um9xaDA4ZEFTUzVaNVlhUHA0amxBTkxTY2NRR2xQSFM=",,,
-bash-3.2#
All the ddns records updated by xcat use xcat_key as authentication, so if
you want xcat to update the ddns records, then we need your external ddns
server either allow xcat_key or no authentication needed.
Jarrod, please correct me if I'm wrong.
Best Regards,

Re: [xcat-user] xCAT with external DHCP and DNS
Thanks for the comments guys,
To make it more clearer,
Our situation is as follows, we have an IT DHCP and DNS servers (DNS
supports DDNS)
For DHCP - we can update its next-server entry to point to our xCAT
management server and to the xCAT pxe file
DDNS - Can you please describe the steps for its configuration (xCAT
pushes DNS records to our IT DNS?)
Thanks

We would like both. manually configure the entry on the site DNS (dynamic)
worked OK and the installation succeeded, however, we had to start DHCP on
the xCAT server. this is not something we want, of course.
thx for your reply.

Did you want xCAT to push DNS records? Did you want it to push DHCP
records?

Hello list,
We're trying to install xCAT as an installation server in existing

followed some of the documentation but always something not working

Any good documentation or Howto? anyone has successfully implemented
this?
