YOu can try it . We have been mostly successful if the Management Node is the highest PTF level. For example, if the Management Node is SLES11 SP2 and you are building SLES11 SP1 images. If you are trying to build SLES11 SP2 images on a SLES11 SP1 Management Node, it might work. It just depends on the changes between those two releases of SLES. There are no guarantees when you start combining levels. Maybe someone else on the mailing list has actually done it, or you can let us know if you get a working image.
