The plugin is compatible with having or not having vCenter. vCenter is
required for certain capabilities restricted by vmware (e.g. live
migration). If you do:
nodech <hypervisorrange> hypervisor.mgr=<vcenterserver>
chtab key=vcenter passwd.username=<vcenteruser>
passwd.password=<vcenterpassword>
It will start using vCenter (and in fact will join things to vCenter if not
joined already).

Managing a lot of hosts directly isn't so difficult (in fact, for the
environments that are that large without need for vCenter, xCAT can
actually manage those more quickly directly than with vCenter), however
99.9% of the time a large environment will avail themselves of some feature
or another not available without vCenter.

We can add the clone without template function. The clonevm to template
and back was done because some people found the model more straightforward
than explicitly knowing how to deal with linked clones and what limitations
come along with it, and mapping it to 'clone to master' and 'clone from
master' allowed for some default behaviors that tended to provide benefits
of linked clones without surprises later. The clone to master function is
really a 'clone to vm', followed by 'oh, and change that VM to a
'template'.

#xcat on freenode is where some people hang out.

Subject: [xcat-user] Looking for more documentation on Vmware
            integration

Hi - I'm new to xcat and looking at using it to manage a fairly large
infrastructure. I'm initially focused on the vmware integration, and after
playing around with it in dev, I have several questions and I'm wondering
if someone can point me in the right direction.

So far I've followed the documentation here
http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/xcat/index.php?title=XCAT_Virtualization_with_VMWare
, but I looking for more. For example:

Is there a direct communication path to vcenter? Hitting esxi directly
seems as though it will have its own limitations. For example, I can see
how managing a few hundred esxi hosts will quickly become difficult.

Is there a way to assign VMs to resource pools? I've been able to set
vmcluster, and that works, but I don't see an equivalent for things like
datacenters and resource pools.

Is there a way to clone a vm without using a template? Like for example, I
want to do the equivalent of selecting a VM in vcenter and choosing the
Clone option (I believe this goes back to the direct vcenter
communication).

Anyway, I'm pretty excited to have found xcat and I'm hoping I can find
solutions to the problems listed above. If anyone can answer any of my
questions, or better yet, point me at some documentation that addresses
them, it would be greatly appreciated.

Also, is no one on irc? Is there a channel and I'm just not finding it?

Cheers,
Jestin
