Your understanding is essentially correct.   The blade chassis has one (or
optionally two) managment modules that monitor and control all of the
elements in the chassis. In BladeCenter implemenations, rpower, rinv,
rvitals, etc communicate with this module rather than talking directly to
the management processor on the blades. The management module communicates
with the blades over the internal networks.  I suspect this is some
combination of proprietary protocols and IPMI.
