You are correct and this was an over site in the design. The new
rinstall was to allow you to be able to use it with your
provmethod=<osimagename>.    See this defect
https://sourceforge.net/p/xcat/bugs/3644/.
 In 2.6 it will not work unless your provmethod is install, netboot,
statelite.
The way it was implemented though you will need to be root. I will open
this as a defect. This will be a redesign so expect a fix in 2.8 release.
When you move to 2.8 you will note that we are starting to drop support for
provmethod set to install,netboot,statelite. We are strongly encouraging
to change to osimage and even have a guide.

Subject: [xcat-user] xcat 2.7 rinstall needs root?

Hi all,

I know I'm behind the times, but I just did 2.6->2.7.8 upgrade last night.

I am confused about the new rinstall command. It can't be run as a
regular user as per xcatd's security permissions. It requires root
because it accesses the database directly. Is this by design? What's
the purpose of this?

As a work-around, I just copied in 2.6's rinstall command which works fine.
