Hi Chuck,

Thanks for the hint, I wasn't sure where to look, but when I looked around on
the zhcp node via the GUI, I finally saw that both /var/log/messages and
/var/log/secure were very large. After I emptied /var/log/secure ("cat
/dev/null > /var/log/secure"), I was then able to see the expected disk pools
in the z/VM Resources page and resume normal XCAT GUI usage. Note that this is
only a Proof of Concept, so emptying this file is OK.

I will take your advice about getting the service though, as I also noticed
that some missing service may help with log rotation, perhaps even with this
specific error.

It seems that perhaps more attention is required to the zhcp filesystems,
especially monitoring them for fullness. Presumably it is common to automate
this, which I'll investigate. Is there anything specific to avoid when
manipulating the /var/log files for zhcp? It seems possible to do it while the
server is running, but my method here is potentially disruptive and I would
prefer a "safe" method if there is one.

kind regards,
Peter

The code first looks to see if a file on the zhcp is newer than 5 minutes,
and it will use that; otherwise it will call SMAPI to get the information.

There may be something else off, maybe the zhcp is getting low on space to
create the information. Are you at the latest service level? There are
some exits described in the SMAPI book that you can use to clean out space
on zhcp and xcat startup.

Subject: z/VM disk pool question

Hi,

For some reason the XCAT GUI no longer sees any disk pools on my z/VM system,
when there are some to see. How do I get it to rebuild its disk pool table?

I ask as when I view the Provision->z/VM Resources->Disks page in the GUI, it
says: "Below are disks that are defined in the EXTENT CONTROL file." and shows
an empty table:

No data available in table

I've bounced VSMGUARD and XCAT a couple of times, to no avail. Is there
something else I need to do? I sees the networks OK on the same page:
Querying 1 zhcp(s) for networks.

Querying networks from: zhcp (1 of 1)

...lots of network table data snipped for the DTCSMAPI, XCATVSW1 and XCATVSW2
networks...

Showing 1 to 3 of 3 entries

Here is the z/VM view of the disk pools, the one I'm looking for XCAT to use
for the Linux VMs is called GRPLNX:
