Thomas, Can you share which software complains about /etc/localhost not being a link ? One of the workarounds you can try is to add a postscript which will rename the /etc/localhost to something like /etc/Paris and then link /etc/localhost to it. That's what I thought. man(5) localtime and man timedatectl set-timezone (on CentOS) mention the link handling. I'm not aware of a case where the file is a regular one. A user has just pointed me on a software which notices and complain about that. I'm not really sure of the side effect or not a the file not being a link.
