That's fine, but just for some clarification, I meant a confluent plugin. It
connects to vCenter using whatever credentials you would normally use to log in
to do power operations and such. So you shouldn't need admin rights in vCenter.

One of our greatest obstacles is that my team does not have admin rights on the
ESX. So, we have no ability to install plugins. Even for our development
environment, we would have to submit a request, and it would not be unusual for
it to still be in the approval process in 2026.

So, everything that we do has to treat the nodes as if they were generic
computers with no BMC and the only additional software being VMware tools.

FYI, I have just pushed a 'vcenter' plugin: https: //github.
com/lenovo/confluent/commit/85249ae71b91d77e0b3495427107692acbd3f526 In my
case, 'vcsa' is my vcenter server and I have otherwise created a 'vmw1' virtual
machine (EFI, secure boot off)

FYI, I have just pushed a 'vcenter' plugin:

https://github.com/lenovo/confluent/commit/85249ae71b91d77e0b3495427107692acbd3f526<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/github.com/lenovo/confluent/commit/85249ae71b91d77e0b3495427107692acbd3f526__;!!KOmnBZxC8_2BBQ!0-0XlPwD1lAZayyHmrGytySY7WcprKq7O_FJveHzxC9NbDIVcekQGW7-xjjnVaGX2Mc47xmisCAihGUtRKAu$>

In my case, 'vcsa' is my vcenter server and I have otherwise created a 'vmw1'
virtual machine (EFI, secure boot off) and gave it a serial port
(telnet://:8601 for the url, server type, enabled esxi firewall to access).

[root@r3u20 ~]# nodedefine vcsa # a node to hold the TLS fingerprint for vcenter

vcsa: created

[root@r3u20 ~]# nodedefine vmw1 hardwaremanagement.method=vcenter
bmcuser='administrator@vsphere.local' bmcpass="$MYPASS" bmc=vcsa

vmw1: created

[root@r3u20 ~]# nodeinventory vmw1 -s

[root@r3u20 ~]# nodedeploy vmw1 -n alma-9.5-x86_64-default

vmw1: network

vmw1: on

This is a very rough edition, and particularly the nodeconsole needs work and I
wouldn't advise trying it just yet (and the VMWare firmware won't use it even
when it works).

We are rebuilding our dev cluster and making athe move from XCAT to Confluent,
it has been reported to back to me today that, “Confluent appears to be
designed to use physical nodes with BMCs (ILO,iDRAC, etc.). So far I've been
unable to get it to configured to deploy virtual machines.”

Are there any special steps needed to pxe boot RHEL 9 stateless images to
virtual nodes running under ESX?

We don’t have admin rights to create the virtual machines, but we can change
most of the settings.

The current settings for the first test node, 00, are as follows.

Firmware: BIOS

Boot Delay: 10000

Boot Order:

CD-ROM Drive

Network boot from VMware VMXNET3

Network boot from VMware VMXNET3 #2

Network boot from VMware VMXNET3 #3

Hard Drive
