You may be overthinking this one. In the last few weeks, I’ve got this often when starting an upload. Generally, trying again works. What I think is happening is that your identity validation is timing out because the upload service is very, very busy at this time of year. I suggest you try again once, and if it fails again try again at a different time of day. There could of course be more complicated reasons — broken software or whatever — but start with the easiest.
