Hey All,

I managed to get my hands on the soon to be released (in Australia anyway -
we seem to lag behind the rest of the world in product releases) Samsung
Galaxy S2 phone. Apart from being a phone with excellent build quality - in
my opinion better than anything apple has released, they also sport a Super
AMOLED screen. I compared the screen outside in fairly glary conditions
(midday, moderatly overcast) and found that the picture quality and
readability was better than my Dell Streak. I didn't have any trouble at all
reading text or viewing images on either screen, however the Super AMOLED
display had significanty less colour washout. Its worthwhile noting that
neither phone had additional anti-glare or matte filters/protectors.

For those who don't follow display technologies (majority i'm guessing),
Super AMOLED is basically a fairly recent variant of standard AMOLED
displays. They claim significantly lower power consumption, less glare,
higher contrast and darker blacks. These claims appear to be valid, and it's
easy to see why when you do a bit of reading into the technology behind them
(wikipedia is a good start).

So yeah, the upshot is that if you are in the market for a new phone,
grabbing one with a Super AMOLED display and a GPS could kill two birds with
one stone. The displays going into newer android phones are much, much
better than any of the iPaq's or PNA's i've seen/used.

A list of phones that currently have Super AMOLED displays can be found at:
