I am absolutely amazed how little battery XCSOAR consumes on my HTC Android
(Desire S).

(in comparison to the old Windows Mobile version).

It seems mandatory though that you put your phone into flight mode, as it will
otherwise constantly try to re-connect to a distant GSM mobile tower and runs
down on battery very fast.

Done two hours with XCSOAR, Android device in flight mode and lost only about
20% battery (I did though frequently turn the display off, when not needed)

You could try to activate the "plane mode" of your phone while flying.
That will deactivate the mobile phone connection and should save a bit
of battery. The other idea would be to have an external USB battery
powering your phone when it runs out of power.
