Didn't previous versions of XCS have the option to set cruise efficiency above 100%? As for you actual problem and its solution, I wouldn't like to get another settings which few people understand (expected effeciency). Instead maybe let XCsoar draw not only one optimized point, but a couple of lines, one after each other designating where you have to fly if you expect to be 5, 10, 15% better. But that's far from a finished suggestion. In general I have a feeling it would be possible to design a gliding computer which plays the "what-if game" for me, withouth fiddling with input values.
